The first round of the new season Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series ended with Team Lamborghini Osaka with their drivers Ochiai Toshiyuki and Afiq Ikhwan Yazid, finishes on a high. With a win and a second place overall, the team is now leading the Championship.
The qualifying was held on Saturday 21 May 2016 with Ochiai taking the first qualifying. Ochiai was 4th fastest during the first wet qualifying and suffered some issue with the car's gearbox. As Ochiai came in, the car was attended by the Lamborghini engineers to rectify the issue. It was a tense moment for the team as the 15 minutes clock for the second qualifying has started. It was not until the last 5 minutes remaining, the issue was rectified. Afiq took the car into the track and manage to do an out-lap and one qualifying lap. Afiq managed to do and perfect run and clock the fastest qualifying time for Race 2 beating the Pro from Italy Max Wiser by 0.6 second.
On Sunday, 22 May 2016, Race 1 started with Ochiai piloting the #12 Lamborghini. Ochiai managed to hold on to the 4th position until he came in for the driver change. Afiq drove well and managed to take the lead and won the race by over 14 seconds.
Later that Sunday afternoon the second race took place with Afiq was the first driver. Afiq had a good start and managed to keep the first position after the first corner. He later opened up a gap of almost 8 second but lost it after the safety car came in in Lap 4. The safety car was on track for about 3 laps before the race was restarted. Afiq managed to hold on to the lead even though there was an issue with the gearbox. Afiq then came in for Ochiai to take over. With the car having problem with the gearbox, Ochiai managed to finished 2nd overall.
The team will go to the next round which will be held at Suzuka Circuit, Japan from 11-12 June 2016 leading the Championship.
