Mohamad Afiq Ikhwan Mohamad Yazid, is a passionate young Malaysian race driver with strong natural talent,an excellent sense of race craft as well as vast amount of experience. Afiq Ikhwan is quickly gaining recognition in the Asian and Malaysia Motorsports scenes. Started his racing career in 2007 and within 3 years in the sports he has won 3 karting championship titles and a season in the Formula BMW Pacific Series. Afiq Ikhwan is the 2010 Champion of the Asia and Malaysia Rotax Max Karting Challenge. In 2008 he won his first Karting Championship title i.e the KKS/AAM Malaysia Karting Championship.
Afiq had his first experience in a Formula Car in 2008 when he was selected to the Petronas Formula Experience (PFX) programme. In the PFX 2008 programme which was exclusive for Malaysian, Afiq was the only driver that finishes all the 4 PFX School races on the podium whilst clocking 3 fastest laps in 3 different races.
Going For It
In the highly competitive Formula BMW Pacific Series 2010, Afiq with his string of strong performances managed to finish 6th Overall in the Championship.
In 2011, the Formula BMW Pacific Series was called JK Racing Asia Series after BMW decided to pull out of the series. In 2011 with the support of Team Meritus.GP & Petronas, Afiq Ikhwan was crowned as the vice champion with only 7 points adrift of becoming the champion. Afiq made history in the series when he won 10 out of 18 rounds of the series with three 2nd placing and two 3rd placing. However luck was not with him when he was only 7 points adrift of becoming the SeriesChampion. Afiq was crowned as the Vice Champion of the first JK Racing Asia Series event.
After showing impressive performances in 2011, Petronas continued their support for his development. With Team Meritus.GP, he participated in the JK Racing Asia Series for the second season in 2012. In 2012, Afiq had the opportunity to race at some of the renown race tracks in Europe like Paul Ricard, Siverstone and SPA Francorchamps and won races there. Though displaying outstanding racing abilities and performances, Afiq emerged 3rd overall in the series after several DNF and few technical issues.
With Petronas backing his talent under the Petronas TalentDevelopment Program, Afiq pursued to develop further in 2013, participating in the new Formula Masters China Series that utilizes the TAATUS FA010 Chassis powered by the Volkswagen EVO 2.0 FSI F3 engine. The races were ran in race tracks China, Korea and Sepang, Malaysia. In that Championship, again despite winning 6 races and delivering 13 podiums out of 18 races, Afiq emerged as the Vice Champion short of 2 points to be crowned as the Champion.
In 2013, Afiq was also given the opportunity by Petronas to develop his race skill into driving a GT car and was doing two race series that year. Other than the Formula Masters China Series, Afiq also competed in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series. It was an opportunity to develop his skill prior going into a more competitive GT racing series, a path of his choice. Afiq adopted very well to the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofer 570-4 and displayed an outstanding car handling and race craft in the Series where he was on the podiums for 6 times winning 4 races out of 8 entered. Afiq had his first feel of the Lamborghini during Round 2 of the Series held in Sepang, Malaysia. Despite being his first outing with only 2 hours of testing before doing his first race, he managed a win out of the 2 races held in Sepang Malaysia. He continued to display outstanding driving skill and maturity in the car, and won races in Inje, South Korea, Fuji Speedway, Japan and a podium finish in Shanghai, China. In Fuji he had the opportunity to race with few experienced Japanese drivers and came back with 2 wins that weekend. He was the First Runner Up of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series 2013.
Taking It Further
In 2014, Afiq made a move to join the Malaysian Aleyzo Motorsports participating in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo 2014. Aylezo Motorsport is a team established in 2009 as a race team specializing in Lotus cars. It has evolved to include motor racing using a variety of GT cars including Lamborghini, Audi, BMW and many other big brand cars. Focusing on the Lamborghini Super Trofeo in 2014, the team is expecting to participate in higher level of GT car racing in 2015.
In 2015 Afiq turn professional and decided not to proceed with Aylezo but instead raced with StarSpeed Racing, a Hong Kong based racing team in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia 2015. Afiq outstanding performances with 6 wins and 2 podiums finished gave him the title Champion of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series 2015 (Pro-Class). It was in 2015 Lamborghini Squadra Corse have selected Afiq to be in their Young Driver Development Program which intend to develop the participants selected to be developed and exposed to Lamborghini Racing Cars and Program.

In 2016 Afiq joined Team Lamborghini Osaka to participate in the Lamborghini Asia Series 2016 Pro-Am Category with the Am seat is filled by Mr. Toshiyuki Ochiai of Japan. Again in the 2016 season, their combination proved to be dominant when they won 8 out of 10 races with 2 second place finished. Their outstanding performances earned them the title Pro-Am Champion of Asia for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series 2016.
Afiq's excellence driving skill and professionalism has earned him a seat with team Carguy, a new team that was form to participate in the Super Taikyu Japanese Endurance race series. Team Carguy had before this raced a Ferrari 458 GT3, bought a new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 for the 5th Round of the series staged at Okayama International Circuit.
The combination of drivers Takeshi Kimura (Team's Pricipal), Max Orido and Afiq made their first debut in the car and took the 3rd Podium. It was Afiq first endurance race in the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 car. Afiq perfomance in the race at Okayam was visible when he raced the car from P8 to P3 before handing over to Max Orido. The race at Okayama is hope to be the beginning of a Professional career in Japan for Afiq in GT3...
